After Effect Sunburst Tutorial

For this assignment I had to follow an After Effects tutorial. The one I chose was from videocopilot.com (http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/solar/) which involved creating a sun flare.
I used a ton of layers in After Effects and used a lot of the effects that come with After Effects. I animated the layer effects to make it look like an actual fire burning.
I like how this turned out. But it was a bit too power for my laptop to preview while I was making it, so I'm not a huge fan of how some of the sun burst just suddenly disappear. If it didn't take so long to render on my computer I would go back in and fix them

Infographic

For this assignment I was creating an infographic about the struggle of putting on skinny jeans. To create this infographic I used Illustrator. I added drop shadows to the boxes to give the poster a more 3D look, which I thought looked better than just keeping it flat.
I think this assignment turned out okay. I like how the woman struggling turned out, which I was certain was going to turn out terrible.

Flower Garden Short Film

In this assignment I edited together a series of video clips to make them look like a seamless movie  scene. In Premiere Pro I edited out the green screen using Ultra Key and changed the people's coloring to black and white with the Lumetri Color correction.
I think it came out alright considering I've never actually edited together a scene.

Vintage Artwork

In this assignment I was creating an Illustration based on a vintage illustration. In Illustrator I traced the original image with the pen tool. Each color was put on a separate layer. I had to go back into each later at the very end to make sure that no white was showing through.
I think this assignment came out nicely. Since a lot of the colors overlapped different colors in different places, it was a little tricky trying to keep all the colors on separate layers, but I was able to get it figured out in the end.

Steilacoom T-Shirt Designs

For this assignment I was creating a 4th of July based t-shirt design for the town of Steilacoom. We were only allowed to use red, white and blue as the color scheme, which made the design a little more difficult than I would have thought.
I took the image of Steilacoom town hall and did an image trace in Illustrator. I then changed the colors of the building to red, white and blue. I wasn't sure if we were allowed to do different shades of those colors, so I just stuck to the same 3 colors. I then took the image trace and uploaded it into Photoshop and used different brushes to create different looks on each design.
I really like how these designs came out. I particularly like how the American Flag design turned out, because it wasn't like the other t-shirt examples we saw in class, which almost all seemed to feature fireworks.

Pop up Animation

In this animation I was attempting to create a pop up style animation. I created the images in Illustrator and then created the animations in After Effects.
The characters took a while to create and I like how those turned out. But I'm not too crazy about the animation part of it. I wasn't sure how to adjust the pivot point on the images so that they rotated around that instead of in the traditional middle point. I should have looked it up and figured out how to adjust that point to make the pop up animation look for like a pop up book.

Background Mattes

For this assignment I created two different backdrops. The top image was supposed to be a cemetery and the bottom was was a neighborhood with a toilet paper covered tree in the foreground,
I used Photoshop and took elements from a bunch of different images and then created a single composition. I turned everything black and white and adjusted the temperatures and contrasts so that all the elements looked like they belonged together.
I like how the cemetery turned out, but I'm not too crazy about the neighborhood. When I first did the picture I just had a tree and tried to paint toilet paper onto it. Turns out that it's actually very hard to paint toilet paper and make it look realistic. I tried a bunch of different brushes until I gave up and then tried to find a toilet paper covered tree online. That was also very hard to cut out. It took a while. I also wasn't sure how to make the tree look like it was in the foreground and also show that the tree was in a neighborhood.

Asteroid Field

I opted to create an asteroid field for this assignment as opposed to doing a timelapse video. I feel like I have a lot of room for improvement with 3d design and decided to take the opportunity to work on those skills.
I created this in Lightwave. I followed the tutorial and created one 3D asteroid, applied a texture to it ad then duplicated it a bunch of times. I grabbed a space image from Pixabay to use for the background.
I think I did pretty well on this assignment. If I were to redo it I think I would have applied a rock texture to the asteroids instead of just messing around with the colors like the tutorial said to do. I think it would have made it more realistic. If I knew how I would have liked to make the background image look like it was moving, make it look like the image was actually burning instead of being a still image.

Wordpress website

In this assignment I created a website using a template from wordpress.com For my website I decided to fill it with pictures of cute puppies, because who doesn't love puppies? Heartless people, that's who. The header image is a picture taken of my sister's little Boston Terrier puppy. Don't let the picture fool you, she's a feisty little thing. The rest of the pictures are royalty free images from Pixabay, my favorite is the puppy with the flower.
This assignment seemed pretty straightforward and simple. I'm okay with what I did, although I don't think I'd ever use this as an actual website for anything. But the assignment definitely gave me some ideas for how to design my website for the 230 class.

The Wall Playing Cards

In this assignment we were asked to create a design for the back of this card game and also damage, reinforcement and wall cards. For the wall card I decided to go for more of a medieval castle looking wall. I thought the design would be more interesting than just an ordinary brick wall. For the damage card I used an angry face emoticon for inspiration and turned the face into a bomb, I wanted to do something a little different than the designs I saw in the introduction video for the reinforcement card. Instead of just showing tools I wanted to incorporate the person doing the reinforcement into the card. As for the back of the card, I used an image of an exploding wall from pixabay and enhanced and changed the colors of it in Photoshop. I then took it into Illustrator and did an image trace on the image.
I'm happy with my designs for this assignment. I wanted to make the wall card look more 3d, but since I spent so much time on the backer card, I ran out of time.

AE Shape Animation

For this assignment I was animating vector shapes in After Effects. I was trying to create a sort of kaleidoscope effect.  I used the star tool and changed the number of points. A lot of the animations were done by messing with the shape dynamics and some were done with the twist animation.
I'm okay with the way this turned out. I wish I could have spent more time on it and add more shapes and have the animation go faster, but unfortunately I ran out of time.

Vinyl Stickers

In this assignment I was creating vinyl stickers. The wolf is a single color sticker and the penguin is a three color sticker. I created the design in Illustrator and then used the vinyl cutter at school to cut out the pattern for the stickers.
I really like how these turned out, especially the wolf. I've never created a sticker before, so this was definitely a fun, new assignment and really enjoyed doing it.

Photoshop Painting

For this assignment I was trying to create a painting in Photoshop from a picture I took in Hawaii a couple years ago. In Photoshop I used the live brush tool and a variety of different wet media brushes to turn my picture into a painting. I love the live brush tool because it allows you to pick up colors directly from the photograph which makes the colors look more realistic.
I'm happy with the end results of this painting. The clouds and the water took a long time to do since I was using a fairly small brush to get all the details I wanted, but I think it was worth the time I put into it.

Drawing Tablet

In this assignment I was trying to make a lifelike animal portrait using brushes in Photoshop. I used a drawing tablet and was able to create a lot of detail using a variety of stipple brushes. I had a picture from Pixabay that I used for reference to get the colors and outline right. What I liked about the stipple brushes was that I was able to get a wide variety of colors into my composition.
I feel like this was a very successful assignment and was happy with the results. If I had more time I definitely would have continued and finished the whole tiger.

JQuery Slideshow

http://ddsgn220.volume11.com/JanineKelley/
In this assignment I was trying to customize a jQuery slideshow template. I replaced the slideshow's pictures with my own pictures and added a div container and a footer. I downloaded the slideshow's original site files and customized them in Dreamweaver. I used Photoshop to convert the images to the correct sizes to fit the slideshow.
I'd say I did a good job on this assignment. It's been a while since I actually used Dreamweaver, so I was surprised that I remembered as much as I did. The assignment was definitely easier than having to create a website from scratch (which I'm not sure I could have done as successfully, or at least with out a huge headache, since it has been so long since I used Dreamweaver).

SLAM Cover Designs- Assignment 3

I really wanted to create eye catching designs that looked almost like paintings instead of graphic designs. I've been experimenting with splatter brushes and filters lately and really wanted to incorporate those into these designs.
I used both Illustrator and Photoshop for this assignment. I got a couple images from Pixabay and then did images traces on them. Then I changed the colors to less realistic and more artsy colors. Then in Photoshop I applied a few filters to the owl and then used a few splatter brushes to complete the look. For the lion in Photoshop I used the smudge tool to smooth out the lines to look more like actual fur.
I'm really proud of both of these designs. I'm really happy with how they turned out.

Animated GIF- Assignment 2

In this assignment I was trying to come up with a unique, fun design. At first I thought about doing a humorous GIF, but then I decided to go a different route and go with more of a playful design. To create this GIF I first created the background image and then created separate layers to "animate" the water. I then created the dolphin and put it in between two different layers so that it would look like it was diving out of and into the water.
I think I did an okay job on this assignment. I would have liked to create something a little more detailed, but I decided against it because frame by frame animation for this assignment would have taken quite a bit of time.

Animated Brush- Assignment 1

On this project I was trying to use somewhat realistic brushes so that they blended well with the original image. I downloaded a set of firework brushes and painted them onto my original image, then animated the brush strokes in After Effects.
Overall I think I did okay on the assignment. I wouldn't say it's one of my best or favorite pieces of work, but it's definitely not my worst.
